Ganoderma curtisii

In October while climbing some trees we spotted the Golden Reishi, Ganoderma curtisii, fruiting from some old maple stumps in a manicured grassy area littered with white pine needles.  I had always read that it was a Southern species, but was referred to this illuminating research paper on the global diversity of Ganoderma and learned it is not uncommon in the North :

We plan to revisit the spot next summer to get some fruiting bodies and attempt to clone it for our local strain bank. Perhaps someday we can incorporate it into our medicines.
