It doesn't get better than this

May in Massachusetts is explosive. Morels tend to peak right around May 15th, and I have the most luck looking under dead or dying elm trees. To be more exact, elm trees over 10" in diameter that still have bark and have died within the last 5 years. I scout all winter and check spots in early May- this year we developed three new morel spots where the picking was fantastic. While morel hunting you may also be enchanted by the birdsong of the newly arrived warblers and songbirds from the tropical south.

Hearing black throated greens, yellow warblers, prairie warblers, ovenbirds, common yellowthroats and redstarts while picking mushrooms in the dense Eastern Woodland thickets is close to heaven.
